Frequently Asked Questions

What is a RCFE?

RCFE stands for residential care facility for the elderly.  A RCFE is a care facility offers care to the elderly in a residential home, as opposed to a hospital, institutional facility, or retirement community.  At a RCFE, residents are provided assistance with a variety of activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, dressing, etc.), while encouraged to exercise independence in areas in which they do not need assistance.  In a home setting, residents enjoy individualized care and attention with caregivers, allowing them to form close and loving relationships with one another.

Are you licensed?

Yes, we are licensed by the California Department of Social Services to offer care to non-ambulatory and ambulatory residents.  Our license number is 075600685.

Do you care for persons with dementia/Alzheimer's?

Yes, our care home is licensed to offer care to persons with dementia.  In order to do so, we offer additional training to our staff to meet the special needs of persons with dementia/Alzheimer's.  We also have informative videos on dementia that we happily lend to families so they can further understand the experiences of their loved one.

Do you care for persons on hospice?

Yes, we are licensed to provide care for persons receiving hospice services.  We work collaboratively with hospice agencies and their staff (visiting nurses, social workers, etc.) to fulfill residents' care plans and provide the utmost end-of-life comfort to residents.

What kind of staff do you have?

Our primary staff consists of caregivers who are involved in nearly all aspects of a resident's care, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living, administration of medications, preparation of nutritious meals, and maintenance of clean accommodations.  All of our staff are first aid certified and receive on-going annual trainings in a variety of topics including medication knowledge and administration, dementia care, nutrition and hydration, psychosocial needs, resident rights, mandated reporting, and special needs.  Our caregivers readily build strong bonds with residents, as well as with the families of residents.

We have a recreational activities consultant who visits at least once a week and facilitates activities to stimulate residents' memory, senses, motor skills, and socialization.  A variety of the activities residents engage in include baking, arts and crafts, listening to music from various time periods, celebrating holidays, and games.

We also have three administrators who oversee care home operations to ensure that a high level of care and comfortable accommodations are provided to each resident.

Do you have nurses on staff?

RCFEs do not have nurses on staff, since residents generally only need assistance with activities of daily living.  However, should residents need care beyond the first aid caregivers can provide, residents may receive medical care from visiting nurses (as long as the condition does not warrant 24-hour medical care).  A resident's physician would determine whether a resident needed care from a visiting nurse.

Do you offer night-time care?

Our caregivers make routine rounds to check on residents throughout the night and for an additional fee we can provide continuous awake night-time staff.

What kinds of activities do you offer?

Throughout the day, resident's engage in leisure activities such as walking on the grounds, reading (books, newspapers, magazines), watching various programming, listening to music, 1:1 socialization with staff, as well as games or arts & crafts.  For residents interested in pursuing their spirituality, we facilitate visits with member from their religious/spiritual community.   Also, see "What kind of staff do you have?" and read about our recreational activities consultant.

How are meals prepared?

Nutritious meals are prepared fresh, on-site every meal and residents are offered a variety of fruits and vegetables, along with food from each major food group.  We accommodate resident requests as well as prepare special diets, such as soft food or no-sugar/diabetes diets.

What are your rooms like?

We have six private rooms, ranging in size.  Residents may use our complimentary furniture (bed, dressers, chair, decorations), or their own.  Residents and their families are encouraged to personalize the rooms and may decorate as they wish.  Rooms are also equipped with grab bars and emergency exits for resident safety.

What is the admission process?

Generally, prospective residents and/or their family first come to the home for a visit.  If the prospective resident is unable to attend the tour, a care home administrator will visit the prospective resident at his/her location, to assess his or her appropriateness for residential care.  Likewise, the resident's physician will need to complete a standard Physician's Report form (provided from the administrator), detailing the prospective resident's health.  Based on the resident's care needs, a monthly rate will be determined.  On the day the new resident moves in, the resident and/or family will complete an admission agreement and additional forms (personal property, medication list, etc.).

What is the cost for care and accommodations?

The monthly cost varies depending on the size of the room and the level of care a person needs.  The range for a smaller room averages between $2500-3500 and a larger room ranges from $3500-$5500.
